Discover the most beautiful garden in the Indian Ocean, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden at Pamplemousses. It was renamed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam or SSR in 1988. Our beloved father of the nation was cremated in the garden, thus the memorial or ‘Samadhi’ which means 'tomb' in Hindi is found in the garden. The Garden was opened as a private garden by the French Governor of Mauritius nearly 300 years ago and later it became the National Garden and it stretches over endless acres of land.

The tour is highly recommended for nature lovers, its a home to an incredible variety of tropical plants and herbs. The garden has 85 different varieties of Palm Trees brought from various countries such as Royal Palm, Raffia Palm, Bottle Palm, among them the Talipot Palm also known as Corypha Umbraculifera, a majestic palm tree reaching heights of up to 25 metres. The Talipot Palm bears flowers only once when it reaches at 40-60 years old and dies after producing seeds. The Talipot Palm has the biggest inflorescence in the plant kingdom.

The SSR Botanical Garden has a rich plant diversity comprising of some 500 plant species. These include trees, shrubs, perennials, climbers and bulbs of both native and exotic species. Some of them flower during summer and others during winter. In recent years, phenological observations have shown different responses of plant species due to the effect of climate change. Various plant species react differently and show phenotypic changes. The seasonal pattern of flowering have changed over the years. In species like Brownea grandiceps, the blooming is getting earlier each year. The flowering period that is shown in this presentation is based on observations made strictly at the SSR Botanic Garden. The blooming period of certain species may vary due to changes in the climatic conditions.

There is an animal corner with deers, tortoises and several bird species among them there are parrots and ducks. Within the ponds many aquatic animals like turtles, fishes, eels and giant water lilies are seen. The bats are Mauritius only endemic mammal, can also be spotted hanging on trees during the day time.

The first Sugar Mill, the Château de Mon Plaisir an old Sugar Mill Model has been built by the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture in 1953. It is a replica of early sugar mills with vertical cylinders drawn by oxen. The Château de Mon Plaisir was a small building with flat roof and circular veranda till the year 1839. The present one storeyed has been erected by the English towards the 19th Century and is listed under the National Monuments and as such is protected by law.

The grand entrance with the majestic wrought iron gates has won the first prize at the International Exhibition at London's Crystal Palace in 1862.

The great personalities and Celebrities have planted trees, among them you may find Nelson Mandela, Indira Gandhi, François Mitterand and Princess Margaret.
